Maximum number of participating students: 100

The Fractals Workshop is a generative design and computation workshop that combines logic, geometry, natural systems and structure. This workshop is an adaptation of the teaching methods practiced at the Design Research Lab at the AA School of Architecture in London.

The focus is on developing prototypical design systems from the bottom up using analog algorithms versus designing from the top down. The method is inspired from the organic growth of natural systems, parametric architecture, structural systems, mathematics and geometry, and algorithms. The workshop encourages teamwork, design thinking, 3D thinking and logic. The Fractals Workshop series is an ongoing iterative design research that has no final output, and build upon the research of previous iterations. The workshop strategy encourages learning about generative and parametric design from its very basic building blocks.

Since 2011, the Fractals Workshop has been to many cities and design events all over the world, and has been taught in-person and well as online at various schools of design and architecture.

Instructors:

Takbir Fatima Takbir Fatima is an architect, educator and entrepreneur. She is the Director of the inter-disciplinary experimental design and architecture studio, DesignAware and the Fractals Workshop. Takbir has an MArch in Architecture + Urbanism from the Design Research Lab at the Architectural Association (AA) School of Architecture, London. She is also a fellow of Startup Leadership Program. DesignAware was longlisted by Dezeen as Emerging Architecture Studio of the Year 2020. Takbir is passionate about learning from nature, deciphering puzzles and patterns, and collective authorship. In her TEDx talk, she stresses on the need to move away from the Single Solution Syndrome in design and education. Takbir has exhibited and presented her work and methods at various design events around the world.
