Generative Environmental Optimization using Ladybug and Octopus

-advanced computation,-computational design,- data visualization,- environmental design | - online workshop | -English

Description:

Required Skills: Advanced Begginer and Competent skills in Rhino 3D and Grasshopper

Required Software: Rhino 3D and Grasshopper

Required Hardware: Windows PC
Maximum number of participating students: 100

The workshop focuses on multi-criteria optimization searches using a genetic algorithm, emphasizing the condition in which one goal can only be improved at the expense of another. The goal is to increase building performance by balancing competing criteria or objectives. The emphasis of this workshop is recreating a scene with factors acting as genes and aims acting as environmental shapers of the phenotype. The genetic algorithm is a capable and effective method within computational design, being able of improving both the design flow and the viability of its products.

The environmental inputs will depend on local weather data analyzed through the Ladybug Tools plug-in for Grasshopper, and the resulting studies and values will be used as guidance within form-finding optimizations using the Octopus Plug-in.

Instructors:

Dragos BRESCAN I am an Architect specializing in Computational Evaluation and Energy Efficiency. My work aims to fully implement computational tools as a holistic approach within architectural development and research, through practice, pedagogy, and andragogy. I graduated with B.Arch and M.Arch from the Faculty of Architecture and Urbanism at Spiru Haret University in Bucharest, Romania in 2014. My further studies took me to UIC Barcelona where I completed an M.Arch in Biodigital Architecture in 2017, followed by my Ph.D. in Computational Evaluation, titled: "Adapted and Adaptive". Professionally I work as an Architect at Droplet Architecture in Romania, and as Associate Professor and Researcher within the Institute of Biodigital Architecture and Genetics.
angad Angad Warang is an Architect specialising in Computational Design and Digital Fabrication. His work is at the intersection of Teaching, Research and Practice. He currently resides in Rotterdam and shuttles between Barcelona and Mumbai. He graduated with MS Arch in Biodigital Architecture from UIC, Barcelona in 2017 and completed his PhD titled ‘Architecture of Computational Ecosystems’ from UIC Barcelona. Moreover, he works as a Research Assistant at the Institute for Biodigital Architecture and Genetics, ESARQ, UIC, Barcelona. Angad teaches Computational Design and Digital Fabrication as an Associate Professor at the Biodigital Architecture Master in UIC, Barcelona. He also teaches as visiting faculty in design institutes in India while conducting independent workshops.
