Maximum number of participating students: 100
In this course participants will investigate possible novel environments through simultaneous exploration of form, material, and light. Applicants will explore the 3D deformation of model forms as a departure point to create an unique ensemble. We will start by looking at letters in different fonts with a variety of characteristics for our formal exploration. Selected letters will be used as the geometrical base component. Familiarity of the character will play a significant role. We will continue by constructing, deconstructing, and abstracting the letters to make an unfamiliar geometry using different iterative methods. Every stage will involve the creation and evolution of a 3D singular object, and with the use of a real time render engine, participants will play with various materials, lights, and the camera to create fantastical effects. Working in this design environment, they will quickly generate large quantities of 3D-models and images. The intention is to get participants familiar with parametric design tools and introduce them to new design methods through different exercises. As an outcome of the workshop, each participant will create a series of images that outline or tell a story of the letters transformation.
